Veteran's Day Program
Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Bishop Hogan Memorial School held its 14th annual Veterans Day Program November 9, 2011, in the school's gymnasium. Col. Roger Donlon, a Medal of Honor recipient, was the guest speaker at the program. The 7th and 8th grade classes did a traditional presentation for prisoners of war and soldiers who have gone missing in action, and the Eagles Wings Choir sang for the crowd. Prayers were also read at the assembly, more songs sung, colors were posted, and, after ending remarks, "God Bless America" was sung by the crowd.

On December 5, 1964, all nine surviving members of Team A-726 joined Captain Donlon in the East Ballroom of the White House as President Lyndon Johnson hung the Medal of Honor around their team leader's neck. The humble hero introduced them all to the president and said, "The medal belongs to them, too." Later he would write of that night, "It was a team effort, and I was simply the designated leader." Captain Donlon's award was the FIRST MEDAL OF HONOR awarded for action during the 14-year Vietnam War. Ultimately, 238 American soldiers would be awarded our Nation's highest honor in that war. One hundred fifty of them died in their moment of Valor.

We had a wonderful turn out with 91 guests for our program, and 62 were able to join us for lunch. Thank you Col. Donlon. We greatly appreciate your service for our country. Thank you for giving your time for our program. Thank you Mary Garr for all your hard work putting the program together!!
