Lunch/911 Remembrance September 9, 2011
Bishop Hogan Memorial School held their 9/11 remembrance ceremony Friday morning, September 9, 2011, followed by a Grandparents lunch. Pictured above, we see two students from Bishop Hogan, taking turns reading during the assembly. Brian Murrell, Assistant Principal for the school, as well as the seventh and eighth grade teacher, wrote and put together the assembly. He sits in the background. e would like to thank all the grandparents who came to the 9/11 Remembrance Assembly that started at 10:30 and Grandparents' Day for lunch.
We had over 60 grandparents that came to have lunch with their favorite grandchildren. Some even took a little extra time to go to the student's classroom for a tour. It meant so much to the teachers and students that so many caring grandparents took time out of their day to spend time with us. |

Catholic Priest Hermes Leaving St. Columban Church Constitution-Tribune, Friday, May 27, 2011
CAPTION: Father Tom Hermes, who became the pastor of St. Columban Catholic Church, as well as the principal of Bishop Hogan Memorial School in the summer of 2005, recently announced that Bishop Finn, of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese, was transferring him to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Missouri. The transfer will take place on July 1, this upcoming summer. He was originally brought in to build Bishop Hogan Memorial School back up to a stable, premier level of Catholic educational prowess within the Chillicothe community. On July 1, Father Tom Hermes will be transferring to another community in need of his assistance. "Catholic education is important, not only here in Chillicothe, but throughout the entire diocese," said Hermes, who will be transferred by the Bishop Robert Finn of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Missouri. "The reason I'm being transferred is because the church in Montrose needs assistance to strengthen its catholic school." Hermes was brought in as the pastor of St. Columban Catholic Church, as well as principal of Bishop Hogan school, on July 1, 2005, following Father Matt Rotert. Rotert was, coincidentally, originally from Montrose and served as pastor of St. Columban for seven years between 1998 and 2005. Hermes came to the St. Columban parish from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Clinton, Missouri. Montrose is approximately 22 miles south of Clinton. St. Mary School, in Montrose, is in a similar situation that Bishop Hogan was before Hermes' arrival. While he did not elaborate on such details, Father Tom did hint towards his strengths, and the reasons he gets placed within certain parishes by the diocese's head. "The Bishop says I have good administrative skills, and good financial skills," he said.
Hermes stressed the fact that Bishop Hogan Memorial School will remain open after his departure. Donna Saccaro, who taught fifth and sixth grades at Bishop Hogan during the 2010-11 school year, will take over as principal for the school. Seventh and eighth grade teacher Brian Murrell will be stepping in as vice-principal. "I've enjoyed my time here at St. Columban," Hermes said. |

The play is an original and was written locally by Steve Whitson, a St. Columban parishioner. "The story of Fatima is one of the most extraordinary events to happen in the 20th century," said Whitson, who also directed the play. Luther King Day Memorial Program
The approximately 40-minute program included several vocal music performances by the school's Eagles Wings choir (above) and short reflections on King's life, faith, and work. The program again featured Charles Epps of Chillicothe (inset, lower left), who gave some reflections and also re-read a portion of King's final public speech, which has come to be known as the “I've Been to the Mountaintop” speech given in Memphis at a sanitation workers rally on April 3, 1968, the night before he was slain outside a Memphis motel. In addition, BHMS sixth grade student Matthew Sturm (inset, lower right) recited an abridged version of the latter portion of King's most famous speech, “I Have a Dream,” given during the August 1963 civil rights “March on Washington.” In addition to the school's students and faculty, an estimated 30-40 parents and other members of the public attended. THE 35TH ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE We are thankful to Father Tom for allowing our parish 8th graders the opportunity to experience this faith-building pilgrimage. Those from our parish attending were: Brian Murrell, teacher; Mary Garr and Mary Mathew, adult chaperones; Zachary Garr, Jake Mathew, Hunter Keller, Addie Stottlemyre, Stephanie Wade, and Emily Clark, students. Thank you to the parishioners that have supported us through your donations at our breakfasts and dinner with your free will offerings and to the Knights of Columbus. Without your help, these young people would miss a very important opportunity that helps to shape their moral lives. CHRISTMAS
